Instructions for mapping drives to the AAE File Server
How To Open Aae File In Windows
- AAE files are used by iOS 8 and later and OS X 10.10 and later. If you import pictures from an iOS device to Windows, the JPEG images will only get transferred and not the AAE files, which will cause you to lose your edits. Also, AAE files can be deleted without erasing your pictures but any edits made to.
- AAE files are created by the Photos app in iOS 8 and later and OS X 10.10 and later. The files save edits made in the app to images so the original images are not affected. AAE files are stored in the same location as the images for which they contain the edits.
AAE file is a XML based format that created by Appleās Photos application, which contains the information about the modifications made to the photo file. Similar to the other project files, such as DNG, which contains the original photos to remain unmodified in case users decide to revert photos to their original states. If Windows recognizes the filename extension, it opens the file in the program that is associated with that filename extension. When Windows does not recognize a filename extension, you receive the following message: Windows cannot open this file: example.aae To open this file, Windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it.
Please note: If you are computer is not part of the WIRED Taylor Hall network, you will need to Setup/Connect Campus VPN BEFORE doing the steps below.
If you have a department-owned Windows desktop, these steps are unnecessary. If you are not automatically receiving your network drives, please contact ITSC Staff immediately.- Right click This PC on the Desktop or on the left in File Explorer and select Map Network Drive
- Enter which network share you wish to connect to. Typically, the address used for the AAE file server is: files.aae.wisc.eduaae
Within that share, you will find the following subfolders:- groups - location for most projects and group shares
- dept - location for adminstrative department files
- temp - location for community file sharing
- users<yourCampusNetID> - your personal private files
research.drive.wisc.edu<pi-netid> If you are working with a PI that has data stored on ResearchDrive, use the preceding address to access that share. - You can choose to select Reconnect at sign-in depending on your preference for that option.
- Click Finish
- Fill in your Campus NetID and password in the form <NetID>@wisc.edu
- Click OK
